Replacing Conventional Plastic with Eco Film® for Plant Packaging

The Challenge

The customer serves the UK by providing sustainable solutions to erosion control, restoration, and natural flood management along rivers. They are also the largest grower of native wetland plants in the UK and the largest producer of coir fiber rolls in Europe. In keeping with their image of environmental responsibility, they were eager to reduce their use of conventional plastics and began considering Eco Film® (compliant to ASTM D6400/EN 13432 for commercial composting only) as an alternative for packaging plants in transit. They needed bags that would be the same size as their previous packaging but reflect their image of taking responsibility for the environment.

The Solution

The 33-gallon Eco Film® liner bag (16.75” x 16.25” x 44”) turned out to be a good match. Samples of the Eco Film® Bags were supplied for field trials to see if they met the customer’s compostability needs. The bags were used to package wet trays of new plants when boxing up an order to protect them in transit and avoid seepage.

Customer Success

The Eco Film® Bags proved satisfactory, and the customer began to buy them on a regular basis. They stated, “We’d been looking for an alternative option to the conventional plastic bag and Lake helped us achieve this with their compostable substitute.”
