After a successful trial, CNC Speedwell Ltd introduce EnviroRinse™ 201 to 10 of its ABB FlexLoader SC 3000 XL Machining Cells.

CNC Speedwell Limited, is a leading supplier of high precision machined components to the truck and automotive industry. With a range of CNC machining centres, across four sites, it produces in excess of 6 million pieces each year.

The Challenge

In January 2020, CNC Speedwell realised it needed more component protection. With new automated feed lines being installed, production was increasing and the company’s practice of using an alternative cleaner to wash and rinse its machined cast iron components provided just a maximum of 2-3 weeks corrosion protection. This length of protection is not long enough to guarantee rust free products on delivery to their customers and resulted in costly returns.

The Solution

To address the problem, CNC Speedwell began using EnviroRinse™ 201 in it’s ABB FlexLoader SC 3000 XL automated machining cell.

  • Concentration of EnviroRinse™ 201 was maintained at between 5-6%, with the dip tank temperature maintained at 66°C+/-1°C.
  • Test coupons were used to compare the corrosion properties of CNC Speedwell’s previous solution and EnviroRinse™ 201.
  • Lake Engineering Solutions provided all documentation regarding the trial with monitoring charts for Brix, Titration, Dosage, and Filtration.

Testing

Two sets of steel coupons were submerged to their mid-point in both the EnviroRinse™ 201 and a competitive solution. Over a period of 8 weeks, the company continually monitored the effectiveness of EnviroRinse™ 201 by measuring its Brix, Titration, Dosage, and Filtration.

The images (above left) showed that there was no visible difference in corrosion protection between treated and untreated products after two weeks storage in a standard factory environment.

The images (above right) show a distinctive difference between the treated and untreated areas, demonstrating the high level of corrosion protection EnviroRinse™ 201 provides when stored under the same storage conditions as the competitive product.

When compared against the competitive product (left), EnviroRinse™ 201 (right) gives a uniform and improved protection across the entire surface of the component.
